Antimicrobials and renal failure in neutropenic patients BJID
França,Monique Sedlmaier; Lima,Stella Sala Soares; Duclou,Caroline Naback; Goulart,Eugênio Marcos Andrade; Romanelli,Roberta Maia de Castro.
Antimicrobial treatment is often indicated to neutropenic patients. Although renal failure is a common complication of many antibiotics, no information could be found in the literature defining which are the best screening criteria for detecting renal injury. In this paper, the authors aim to assess the progress to renal failure in neutropenic patients on antimicrobial use and to compare different diagnostic criteria of renal failure in association to antimicrobial agents used. This is a cohort study conducted from February to August 2006 at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, which included patients with neutropenia and antimicrobial therapy for the treatment of Healthcare Associated Infections notified by the Hospital...

Epoetin alfa resistance in hemodialysis patients with chronic kidney disease: a longitudinal study BJMBR
Santos,E.J.F.; Hortegal,E.V.; Serra,H.O.; Lages,J.S.; Salgado-Filho,N.; dos Santos,A.M..
Anemia is an inevitable complication of hemodialysis, and the primary cause is erythropoietin deficiency. After diagnosis, treatment begins with an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA). However, some patients remain anemic even after receiving this medication. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with resistance to recombinant human erythropoietin therapy with epoetin alfa (αEPO). We performed a prospective, longitudinal study of hemodialysis patients receiving treatment with αEPO at our reference hospital from July 2015 to June 2016. Clinical data was collected, and the response to αEPO treatment was evaluated using the erythropoietin resistance index (ERI). The ERI was defined as the weekly weight-adjusted αEPO dose (U/kg per...

The effect of bacterial lipopolysaccharide on gastric emptying in rats suffering from moderate renal insufficiency BJMBR
Rigatto,S.Z.P.; Collares,E.F..
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the response of rats suffering from moderate renal insufficiency to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS, or endotoxin). The study involved 48 eight-week-old male SPF Wistar rats (175-220 g) divided into two groups of 24 animals each. One group underwent 5/6 nephrectomy while the other was sham-operated. Two weeks after surgery, the animals were further divided into two subgroups of 12 animals each and were fasted for 20 h but with access to water ad libitum. One nephrectomized and one sham-treated subgroup received E. coli LPS (25 µg/kg, iv) while the other received a sterile, pyrogen-free saline solution. Gastric retention (GR) was determined 10 min after the orogastric infusion of a standard saline test...
